Je pensais qu'il devait s'agir d'un autre TUCKER; pas à lui étant donné qu'il s'appelait William H. Tucker , j'ignorait qu'on l'appelait Bill. Merci pour la précision.

William H. Tucker , an attorney and former Chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission under President Kennedy, whose life was shaped by his service with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II, passed away on Friday, November 21st, 2008 surrounded by his family on Cape Cod. He was 85.
Born in Boston, he joined the Army in 1942 following the outbreak of World War II and made three combat jumps with I-Company of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne.
Mr. Tucker had already made a 1943 combat jump at Salerno, Italy when he parachuted into Sainte-Mere-Eglise in the opening hours of the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy, France.
After serving in the entire Normandy campaign, Mr. Tucker made his third combat jump in September 1944 during Operation Market Garden, the Allied invasion of Holland. Rising to the rank of sergeant, he then fought in the Battle of the Bulge until he was wounded on Jan. 3, 1945, in Fosse, Belgium.
Mr. Tucker was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and numerous other World War II campaign medals and decorations.
Francois Gauthier, France’s Consul General to Boston, presented him with the French Legion of Honor - France’s highest military decoration – on July 14th in a ceremony at the Langham Hotel in downtown Boston that was attended by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.
Mr. Tucker had a legal career of more than 50 years and served in the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations on the Interstate Commerce Commission, shaping key transportation regulations during the Civil Rights Movement. But it was his service during World War II during the liberation of France that shaped his life and was among his proudest accomplishments.
He was particularly honored to receive the French Legion of Honor last summer. “It’s a wonderful thing to be recognized by the French,’’ he said at the time. “Not as a hero of any kind, but just as one of many guys – good soldiers and sailors all - who worked very hard to defeat the Germans. Just being part of that, the jump (into Normandy) – I think about it all the time. My participation in D-Day as a paratrooper has been the biggest thing in my life.’’
Following his military service, Mr. Tucker attended Boston University on the GI Bill and earned his law degree before starting a law practice in Athol, Massachusetts in 1949.
Having met a young John F. Kennedy in 1946, Mr. Tucker worked on Kennedy’s Senate and presidential campaigns and was appointed by President Kennedy to the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1960.
He later served as vice-president of the Penn Central Railroad and was a special consultant to the Board of Directors of American Airlines. Mr. Tucker was appointed by President Carter as Commissioner of the National Transportation Policy Commission in 1977 and later served as a U.S. Trustee for the Department of Justice.
During his professional career, Mr. Tucker made numerous trips back to France, Holland and Belgium and wrote four books about his World War II service and his subsequent post-war career, including “Parachute Soldier,’’ “Rendezvous at Rochelinval,’’ and “D-Day, Thirty-Five Days in Normandy.’’
He was a founding president of the 82nd Airborne Division C-47 Club, which now has chapters throughout the United States and Europe, and was a founding committee member for the Liberation Museum in Groesbeek, Holland, which honors the American paratrooper units that served during the 1944 invasion and liberation of Holland.
Mr. Tucker leaves his wife, Caroline, daughters Sandra Duggan of Chicago, and Karen Tucker of Littleton, two son-in-laws Jim Barisano and David Paull, a brother David Tucker of Westwood and three granddaughters Kelley Duggan, Kimberly Duggan and Nicole Horst.
Visiting hours will be held at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., MILTON on Tuesday, November 25th, 2-4 and 7-9PM with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held in Holy Trinity Church, West Harwich on Wednesday, November 26th at 11:30AM.
The Mass will be followed by a reception at Brax’s Landing in Harwichport. A memorial service and burial will be held at a future date.
